How to convert XPS to PDF

XPS (XML Paper Specification) is Microsoft's document format, introduced as a PDF alternative in Windows Vista. While XPS files open natively in Windows, they are rarely supported on macOS, Linux, mobile devices, or any non-Microsoft software. Converting XPS to PDF produces a universally readable document that opens in any browser, on any operating system, and in any standard document viewer.

BoltConverter converts your XPS file to PDF on our servers, preserving the layout, text, and embedded images. The output PDF matches the visual appearance of the XPS document page by page. After conversion, both files are deleted from the server immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not open my XPS file on a Mac or iPhone?

XPS is a Windows-only format. macOS, iOS, and most non-Windows platforms do not have an XPS viewer installed. Converting to PDF solves this because PDF is universally supported.

Will the layout and fonts be preserved in the PDF?

Yes. XPS files embed fonts and use a page-description format similar to PDF, so layout fidelity is high. The output PDF should look identical to the XPS document.

Who creates XPS files?

XPS files are produced by Windows applications when printing to the XPS Document Writer virtual printer, by some enterprise document management systems, and occasionally by medical or legal software on Windows platforms.

What is the maximum file size?

XPS files up to 100 MB are supported.

Are my files stored on the server?

No. Both the uploaded XPS file and the resulting PDF are deleted from our servers immediately after you download the result.
