How to convert XLS to PDF

XLS is the legacy binary spreadsheet format used by Microsoft Excel 97 through 2003. Many businesses and organizations still have archives of XLS files from this era. Converting XLS to PDF produces a read-only document with fixed layout that can be opened on any device without Excel, making it ideal for sharing reports, financial data, and historical records.

BoltConverter converts XLS files to PDF on its servers. The spreadsheet is rendered with all sheets, cell formatting, borders, and charts preserved. The output PDF accurately represents how the spreadsheet looks when printed.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between XLS and XLSX?

XLS is the older binary format used by Excel 97-2003. XLSX is the newer XML-based format introduced in Excel 2007. Both can be converted to PDF with BoltConverter.

Are all sheets included in the PDF?

Yes. Each worksheet in the XLS file is rendered as one or more pages in the PDF, in order.

Are formulas visible in the PDF?

No. The PDF shows the calculated values in each cell, not the formulas. This is consistent with how the spreadsheet looks when printed.

Is my spreadsheet kept private?

Your file is uploaded over HTTPS and deleted from the server immediately after conversion.

What if some columns are truncated in the PDF?

Very wide sheets may have content cut off at the page boundary. For best results, set the print area in Excel before saving and uploading.
