How to convert TXT to EXCEL

Plain text files that contain delimited data (comma-separated, tab-separated, or fixed-width columns) are common outputs from databases, legacy software, export tools, and data pipelines. Converting these text files to Excel produces a proper spreadsheet where data is correctly distributed into rows and columns, ready for sorting, filtering, formulas, and analysis.

BoltConverter reads your text file on our servers, auto-detects the delimiter (comma, tab, semicolon, or space), splits each line into columns, and writes the result as an XLSX spreadsheet. After conversion, both files are deleted from the server immediately.

Upload your text file

Click the upload area or drag your .txt file onto the page. The file should contain delimited data, with one record per line.

Delimiter is detected and data is parsed

BoltConverter identifies the column separator and distributes your data into rows and columns in an Excel worksheet.

Download the Excel file

Click Download to save the XLSX file. Open it in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or any compatible spreadsheet application.

Frequently asked questions

What delimiters are supported?

Commas, tabs, semicolons, and pipe characters (|) are auto-detected. Fixed-width text files may not parse correctly, as they require knowing the exact column widths.

Will my text file be treated as a CSV?

Yes. A comma-delimited text file is functionally a CSV and is parsed the same way. Tab-delimited files are parsed as TSV.

What if my data has inconsistent formatting?

Lines with a different number of fields than expected may produce ragged rows in the output. Clean up inconsistencies in the source text file before converting for best results.

Is there a row limit?

Excel supports up to approximately 1 million rows. Text files up to 100 MB in size are supported by BoltConverter.

Are my files stored on the server?

No. Both the uploaded text file and the resulting Excel file are deleted from our servers immediately after you download the result.
