How to convert to OGG
OGG Vorbis is an open-source, patent-free audio format that has been freely available since 2000. At the same perceptual quality, OGG files are typically 15 to 30 percent smaller than equivalent MP3 files. It is the preferred audio format for many Linux applications, open-source game engines (Godot, Pygame), and web applications where licensing freedom matters. Converting audio to OGG is also the right choice when targeting the Web Audio API, where browsers support OGG natively.
This converter accepts any audio format you upload and encodes it as OGG Vorbis in your browser using WebAssembly. No audio is uploaded to a server. You choose the quality level, which maps to Vorbis variable bitrate settings. The converter is useful for game asset preparation, web audio optimization, and preparing audio for Linux-based media systems.
Upload any audio file
Drop the audio file onto the converter. MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, M4A, AIFF, and other common formats are accepted as input.
Set the quality level
Vorbis quality is set on a scale of -1 to 10, but most users work in the range of 3 to 8. Quality 5 produces roughly 160 kbps on average, equivalent to a good-quality MP3 at 192 kbps. Quality 6 is around 192 kbps, quality 8 around 256 kbps.
Convert in browser
The WebAssembly encoder reads the source audio, decodes it, and re-encodes it using the Vorbis codec. Processing happens locally with no server involvement.
Download the OGG file
Save the .ogg file. Verify it plays in your target application. Firefox, Chrome, and most media players support OGG Vorbis natively. Safari on macOS also supports it.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MP3 to OGG improve quality?
No. You are transcoding between two lossy formats. The audio information discarded during MP3 encoding is not recovered. The OGG file will be approximately the same quality as the MP3, possibly slightly worse due to the additional encoding step.
What is the difference between OGG Vorbis and OGG Opus?
Vorbis and Opus are both audio codecs that can be stored in the OGG container. Vorbis is designed for higher-bitrate music (96+ kbps). Opus is designed for a wider range including voice at very low bitrates (6 to 64 kbps) and music at higher bitrates. Opus generally outperforms Vorbis at equivalent bitrates by a measurable margin.
Is the audio uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your audio never leaves your device.
Why does Unity game engine use OGG files?
Unity defaults to OGG Vorbis for audio assets because it provides good quality at small file sizes without patent royalties, keeping game bundle sizes manageable and avoiding licensing complexity.
Is OGG supported in Safari on iPhone?
Safari on iOS and macOS added OGG Vorbis support in Safari 15 (2021). Earlier versions did not support it. For universal browser compatibility in web audio, MP3 or AAC remains the safer choice.
