How to convert NEF to JPG
NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW camera format. It stores the raw sensor data before any in-camera processing, which gives photographers maximum control over exposure, white balance, and color rendering in post-processing. However, NEF files require Nikon software or a RAW-capable editor to open, and they are too large for casual sharing. Converting NEF to JPG applies demosaicing, white balance, and compression to produce a standard image anyone can view. The conversion runs in your browser using a WebAssembly RAW decoder.
When converting RAW to JPG, you are making permanent decisions about the look of the image. The exposure and white balance adjustments in the conversion cannot be undone later on the resulting JPG. For casual sharing and web use, the default conversion settings produce good results. For professional photography work where maximum control matters, converting in Adobe Lightroom, Capture NX-D, or another RAW editor with fine-tuned settings before exporting to JPG gives better results.
Upload your NEF file
Drop the .nef file onto the converter. Large NEF files (24 MP and up) may take a few seconds to decode on slower hardware.
Adjust conversion settings
Set white balance (auto or a specific temperature in Kelvin), exposure compensation, and output JPG quality.
Preview the result
The converted image is displayed before download. Check the exposure and color rendering. Adjust settings and reconvert if needed.
Download the JPG
Save the output JPG. Keep the original NEF for any future re-processing in a full RAW editor.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting NEF to JPG lose image quality?
Converting from the RAW sensor data to JPG is a one-way process that discards some information. The JPG is perfectly usable for sharing and web use, but you lose the ability to re-develop the RAW with different settings. Keep the NEF for archiving.
Can I batch convert multiple NEF files?
Yes. Upload multiple NEF files and they are processed sequentially using the same conversion settings.
Is this converter specific to Nikon cameras?
This page is for NEF (Nikon). Other RAW formats (CR2 for Canon, ARW for Sony, RAF for Fuji) have their own conversion pages with format-specific decoders.
Will the converted JPG retain EXIF data (camera settings, GPS)?
Yes. Camera model, lens, shutter speed, ISO, aperture, and GPS data from the original NEF are preserved in the JPG EXIF.
Why does the JPG look different from how it looked on my camera screen?
Your camera applies its own picture control profile (sharpening, contrast, color science) to the preview. This converter applies generic processing. For camera-matching output, use Nikon's Capture NX-D or a profile-aware editor.
