How to convert MPG to MP4

MPG (MPEG-1 and MPEG-2) is one of the earliest standardized video formats, widely used for VCD (Video CD) and DVD content in the 1990s and early 2000s. MPG files are still found in digitized home video archives, old DVD rips, and some broadcast equipment outputs. Converting to MP4 makes these files compatible with modern devices and streaming platforms while often reducing file size.

BoltConverter converts MPG files to H.264 MP4 on its servers. The video is re-encoded for modern compatibility while preserving the original resolution and frame rate. Audio from the MPEG stream is converted to AAC.

Upload your MPG file

Click the upload area or drag your .mpg or .mpeg file onto the converter. Files up to 100 MB are accepted.

Conversion runs on the server

The MPEG video stream is decoded and re-encoded to H.264 MP4 with AAC audio.

Wait for processing

MPG re-encoding may take a few minutes for longer clips.

Download the MP4

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between MPG and MP4?

MPG typically refers to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, which uses older codec technology. MP4 usually contains H.264 video, which achieves much better compression at the same quality. An MPG file converted to MP4 is typically 40-60% smaller.

Will the quality improve?

Converting cannot add quality that was not in the original MPG. The MP4 will look essentially the same but will be smaller and more compatible.

Can I convert DVD video files (VOB) to MP4?

VOB files are a different format. BoltConverter has a dedicated VOB to MP4 converter for DVD video files.

Is there a file size limit?

BoltConverter accepts files up to 100 MB. MPG files from old VCDs are usually well under this.

Are my files kept private?

Files are uploaded over HTTPS and deleted from the server immediately after conversion.
