How to convert MKV to MP4

MKV (Matroska) is a flexible open-source container that supports virtually any video or audio codec and can hold multiple subtitle and audio tracks. AVI is an older Microsoft container format with limited codec support and no native subtitle tracks. You might need to convert MKV to AVI for compatibility with older media players, car stereo systems, or hardware video players that do not support MKV.

BoltConverter converts MKV to AVI on its servers. Be aware that some MKV files contain codecs like H.265 or VP9 that AVI technically cannot contain, so the converter re-encodes the video to ensure compatibility with standard AVI players.

Upload your MKV file

Click the upload area or drag your .mkv file onto the converter. Files up to 100 MB are supported.

Server re-encodes the video

BoltConverter re-encodes the video to a codec compatible with AVI and packages it in the AVI container.

Wait for conversion

Re-encoding takes longer than remuxing. Expect a few minutes for typical HD clips.

Download the AVI

Click Download to save the AVI file. Your MKV is removed from the server after conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I want AVI when MKV is technically superior?

Some hardware media players, older smart TVs, and automotive entertainment systems have limited format support. AVI with DivX or Xvid video is widely compatible with older hardware that predates MKV support.

Will multiple audio tracks from the MKV be included?

AVI supports limited audio tracks. The converter includes the primary audio track. Additional audio and subtitle tracks from the MKV are not carried over to AVI.

Is there quality loss?

Yes. Converting between video containers with re-encoding always involves some quality loss. For format compatibility, this tradeoff is usually acceptable.

Is there a size limit?

BoltConverter accepts files up to 100 MB. MKV files from longer recordings may be larger; trimming or using a local tool for large files is recommended.

Are my files private?

Files are uploaded over HTTPS and deleted from the server immediately after conversion.
