M4V MP4

How to convert M4V to MP4

M4V is Apple's video container format, closely related to MP4 but with optional DRM (Digital Rights Management) protection used for iTunes-purchased content. Non-DRM M4V files are essentially MP4 files with a different extension, and converting them to standard MP4 ensures playback on any device without requiring iTunes.

BoltConverter converts M4V files that do not have DRM protection. The video and audio streams are re-wrapped into a standard MP4 container on our servers. DRM-protected M4V files from iTunes purchases cannot be converted, as removing DRM is not supported. After conversion, both files are deleted from the server immediately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between M4V and MP4?

M4V and MP4 are nearly identical container formats. M4V is Apple's version that supports optional iTunes DRM. Non-DRM M4V files are functionally the same as MP4 and can be renamed from .m4v to .mp4 in many cases.

Can I convert DRM-protected M4V files from iTunes?

No. DRM-protected content cannot be converted. Only M4V files without DRM protection, such as those you recorded yourself or encoded in iTunes from your own content, can be processed.

Will there be any quality loss in the conversion?

No. For non-DRM M4V files, BoltConverter re-wraps the streams without re-encoding them, so there is no quality change.

How do I know if my M4V file has DRM?

DRM-protected files typically come from iTunes Store purchases. Files you created yourself or ripped from Blu-ray/DVD are usually not DRM-protected. You can also try renaming .m4v to .mp4 and see if it plays without iTunes.

Are my files deleted after conversion?

Yes. Both the uploaded M4V and the converted MP4 are deleted from our servers immediately after you download the result.
