How to convert M4P to MP3

M4P is Apple's DRM-protected AAC format used for songs purchased from the iTunes Store before Apple removed DRM from its music library in 2009. Unlike regular M4A files, M4P files are encrypted and can only be played on authorized Apple devices and apps. Converting M4P to MP3 for personal use requires first removing the DRM, which Apple's own software handled via iTunes Match or by burning to CD and re-ripping.

This converter processes audio files in your browser via WebAssembly. If you have already obtained a DRM-free version of your M4P (through iTunes Match, a CD burn, or because you purchased a DRM-free upgrade), the converter handles the audio re-encoding locally without any server upload.

Verify your file is DRM-free

Check if your M4P plays in non-Apple software. If it does not, you must obtain a DRM-free version first (via iTunes Match or CD burn/re-rip) before converting.

Upload the audio file

Drop the DRM-free audio file into the converter. The WebAssembly engine reads the AAC audio data locally.

Set MP3 bitrate

Choose your bitrate: 192 kbps or 320 kbps for music; 128 kbps for voice recordings where file size matters more.

Download the MP3

Click Download to save the .mp3 file for use on any device or player.

Frequently asked questions

Can this tool remove DRM from protected M4P files?

No. This converter processes audio data; it cannot decrypt DRM-protected content. You must have a DRM-free version of your audio first.

How do I get a DRM-free version of my iTunes purchases?

Apple removed DRM from most music in 2009. Check your iTunes library for a DRM-free version. iTunes Match can upgrade remaining protected files. Alternatively, burn the tracks to CD and re-rip them, which is allowed for personal backups.

Is this legal?

Converting your own legally purchased music for personal use is generally permissible in many jurisdictions, but laws vary by country. Distributing the resulting files is not permitted.

Is my audio uploaded to a server?

No. Processing happens in your browser via WebAssembly.

Will the MP3 sound as good as the original?

The original M4P was AAC-encoded (lossy). Converting to MP3 adds another generation of lossy compression. At 256 kbps AAC (typical iTunes quality) to 320 kbps MP3, the quality difference is minimal but not zero.
