How to convert MOV to MP4

iMovie exports videos in several formats. The most common export from iMovie is a .mov file using the H.264 codec, which plays natively on Apple devices but can have compatibility issues on Windows and some older smart TVs. Converting the exported iMovie file to MP4 ensures it plays on every device without needing QuickTime installed.

BoltConverter accepts MOV files exported from iMovie and converts them to MP4 on its servers. If you exported from iMovie as a .mov, upload that file here. The video and audio tracks are preserved at their original quality in the output MP4.

Export from iMovie first

In iMovie, use File > Share > File to export your project as a MOV or MP4 file to your Mac.

Upload the exported file

Drag the exported video file onto BoltConverter or click to browse and select it. Files up to 100 MB are supported.

Conversion runs on the server

The file is transcoded to H.264 MP4 with AAC audio on BoltConverter's servers.

Download the MP4

Click Download to save the MP4 file. The source file is removed from the server immediately after.

Frequently asked questions

Should I export from iMovie as MOV or MP4?

iMovie can export directly as MP4 in recent versions (File > Share > File, then select MP4). If you already have a MOV file from an older iMovie export, upload it here to convert it.

Will the quality change?

The conversion from MOV to MP4 with H.264 involves a small generational quality loss, but at typical iMovie export quality settings (high or best), the difference is not visible.

Is there a file size limit?

BoltConverter accepts files up to 100 MB. An iMovie export for a 5-minute HD video is typically 300-500 MB, which exceeds this limit. For longer videos, lower the export quality in iMovie or use a local converter.

Can I share the converted MP4 on YouTube?

Yes. H.264 MP4 is the recommended format for YouTube uploads and works with all other major video platforms.

Are my video files kept private?

Files are uploaded over HTTPS and deleted from the server immediately after conversion. BoltConverter does not retain your video.
