How to convert HEVC to MP4
HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding), also known as H.265, is a video compression standard that achieves roughly twice the compression of its predecessor H.264 at the same visual quality. It is the default recording format on newer iPhones, GoPros, and many mirrorless cameras. The problem is that HEVC requires hardware or software decoding support that many older devices, browsers, and video editing apps lack.
Converting your HEVC video to an MP4 container with H.264 encoding maximizes compatibility. H.264-in-MP4 plays on virtually every device, browser, and platform without additional codecs. BoltConverter handles the re-encoding on our servers and delivers a high-quality compatible output file.
Upload your HEVC file
Click the upload area or drag your HEVC or H.265 video file onto the page. Both .hevc and .mp4 files that use HEVC encoding are accepted.
Server re-encodes to H.264
BoltConverter re-encodes your video using H.264, which is supported by virtually all devices and platforms, and packages it in an MP4 container.
Download the compatible MP4
Once processing completes, click Download to save the H.264 MP4 to your device.
Files are deleted immediately
Both the original HEVC file and the converted MP4 are removed from our servers after your download.
Frequently asked questions
Will there be quality loss when converting HEVC to H.264 MP4?
There will be a small, usually imperceptible quality reduction because this is a transcode between two lossy codecs. BoltConverter uses a high-quality encoding preset to minimize any visible degradation.
Why will my video not play on older devices or Windows Media Player?
HEVC (H.265) requires a decoder that many older devices and some software players lack. H.264 has been universally supported since around 2010, so converting to H.264 MP4 fixes playback on those devices.
My iPhone recorded a .mp4 file, but it still shows HEVC codec. Is that normal?
Yes. Many modern devices use the MP4 container with HEVC video inside. The container format (.mp4) and the video codec (HEVC/H.265) are separate. BoltConverter detects the codec and re-encodes appropriately.
Is there a file size limit?
Files up to 500 MB are supported. For longer videos, you may need to split them into segments before converting.
How long does conversion take?
HEVC re-encoding is computationally intensive. Expect roughly 1-3 minutes per minute of video depending on resolution and server load.
