How to convert HEIC to JPEG

HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones running iOS 11 and later. It delivers roughly twice the compression efficiency of JPEG at the same visual quality, meaning your photos take up about half the storage space. The problem is compatibility: HEIC is not natively supported by many older apps, Windows PCs without the HEIC codec installed, or web upload forms that accept only JPEG.

Converting HEIC to JPEG runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos are decoded and re-encoded locally; nothing is uploaded to a server. There is no file size limit from our side, though very large RAW-quality HEIC files from newer iPhones may take a moment to process on lower-powered devices.

Upload your HEIC file

Drag and drop or click to select one or more .heic files. Processing happens locally in your browser.

Set JPEG quality

Choose a quality level from 70 to 95. Quality 85 is a practical default that preserves photo detail while producing a smaller JPEG than maximum quality.

Convert

Click Convert. The WebAssembly HEIC decoder reads the image data and the JPEG encoder re-encodes it at your selected quality.

Download the JPEG

Save the .jpg file. It will open in any photo viewer, uploader, or editing app without requiring special codec support.

Frequently asked questions

Why do iPhones use HEIC instead of JPEG?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) uses the HEVC/H.265 codec to compress photos. Apple adopted it in iOS 11 to reduce storage use on devices, where internal storage is expensive and non-expandable. The tradeoff is reduced compatibility with older software.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The converter decodes HEIC using a WebAssembly library running in your browser tab. Your image never leaves your device.

Does converting to JPEG reduce photo quality?

JPEG is lossy, so some quality reduction is unavoidable. At quality 85 or higher, the difference is typically invisible in casual viewing. The original HEIC may itself be lossy, making this a second-generation lossy encode.

How do I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible. This switches the camera to JPEG and H.264 video. Note this increases photo file sizes.

Can I open HEIC files on Windows without converting?

Yes, if you install the HEIC Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store (free) and the HEVC Video Extensions (paid, or included with some Windows versions). After installation, Windows Photos and File Explorer will display HEIC files natively.
