How to convert GIF to MP4
GIF is an ancient format from 1987 that became the internet's default for short animations. The problem is that GIFs are remarkably inefficient: a 5-second animation loop that would be 500 KB as MP4 is often 5-10 MB as GIF. Platforms like Twitter, Reddit, and Slack automatically convert uploaded GIFs to MP4 behind the scenes for exactly this reason. Converting directly to MP4 gives you a file that is smaller, smoother, and supported everywhere.
BoltConverter converts your GIF to a looping MP4 on its servers. The frame rate and dimensions are preserved, and the output video loops automatically just like the original GIF. You get a much smaller file that plays back at the same quality.

Server encodes the MP4
Each frame of the GIF is encoded to H.264 MP4 on BoltConverter's servers.
Wait for conversion
Conversion takes a few seconds for most GIFs. Large or high-frame-count animations may take a little longer.

Frequently asked questions
How much smaller will the MP4 be?
Typically 5 to 10 times smaller than the original GIF. A 10 MB GIF often converts to under 1 MB as H.264 MP4 with no visible quality difference.
Will the MP4 loop automatically?
The MP4 file itself does not contain loop instructions, but most social media platforms and messaging apps loop MP4 videos automatically just as they do with GIFs.
Does the GIF color palette affect the MP4?
GIFs are limited to 256 colors per frame. The MP4 conversion renders the same visual output, so any dithering or color banding visible in the GIF will appear in the MP4 as well.
Is there a file size limit?
BoltConverter accepts GIF files up to 100 MB.
Are my files kept private?
Files are sent over HTTPS and deleted from the server immediately after conversion.
